Week #35 Weekly Challenge!

Since I am such a big fan of sketches, I decided to try my hand at creating a few of my own in photoshop. However, instead of coming up with my own layout idea, I thought it would be fun to work backwards from one of the beautifully designed layouts in our our ScrapRoom Idea Gallery.

THIS WEEK'S CHALLENGE: I created the sketch based on Jenny Moore's "Sweet Summertime" layout in the August Idea Gallery. Use the sketch below to jumpstart your creativity and create a layout. Upload your layout (along with your real life name) to the WEEK #35 CHALLENGE FOLDER. All layouts must be uploaded by 9:00 a.m. CST on Monday, September 6th.
UPDATE: I just found out that the sketch I created from Jenny's layout was actually based on a sketch created by Frances Sylvia. Kudos to Frances for creating such a great layout. You can check out her blog and some more of her fantastic design work HERE!

Week #34 Weekly Challenge!

Tomorrow marks my 40th Birthday! I've been a bit emotional and slightly melancholy the past few weeks thinking about turning 40 tomorrow. I still feel like I'm about 32, but the mirror begs to differ. :) My primary thought has been that turning 40 marks the halfway point to Heaven - best case scenario. I'm not quite sure how I feel about that - but it is what it is - so we'll be celebrating at our house this week.

I gave my family members the "opportunity" to sign up for one day this week to give me a surprise Birthday Treat. ;) My oldest son took me to The Flying Pig last night for shaved ice (my favorite summer treat), and my #4 son signed up for today, and he gave me a stack of (10) "I'll do whatever you want" coupons. As soon as I'm done with this post, I'll start cashing some of those little babies in. I've got a few chores that I need help with, and the coupons expire at midnight! :) We're also going to a movie later tonight - so "Treat Week" just keeps getting better and better. We don't generally do Birthdays this big at our house, but 40 is BIG - so we're celebrating a little more this week.

This weekend, my sister and her family are coming up for my Birthday Party. My family is getting together for Birthday Cake with Buttercream Icing (does it get any better than that) and Make-your-own-Sundaes. I've been writing short letters to everyone, telling them how much they mean to me and how blessed I am to have them in my life. I've been reminded in all of my "turning-40-thoughts" that it is the People who love us unconditionally that make our journey through life meaningful and joyful. So, while I'm not always the person that I want to be, and I haven't accomplished everything I wanted to (and never will), I am blessed beyond measure because of the people that God has brought into my life to share this journey with. I could not ask for anything more...

Okay, obviously that's a long introduction to this week's challenge... it's the turning-40-thing.

THIS WEEK'S CHALLENGE: You have a choice this week. You can EITHER create a Birthday-themed layout (if you want to take the easy way out), OR you can create a layout about someone who has been a blessing in your life - someone who has brought meaning and joy to your journey. Upload your layout to the WEEK #34 CHALLENGE FOLDER. All layouts must be uploaded by 9:00 a.m. CST on Monday, August 30th.

THE PRIZE: We've got some more fabulous paper collections from Bobunny to give away this week! You'll get three collections of paper, including Mama-Razzi, Roughin' It, and the brand new CHA-Summer release - Cambridge! That's 33 sheets of gorgeous double-sided paper! Think of the great theme-albums you can create with these great sets! Or, as always, with this many papers, you can always share the wealth with your best scrappin' bud. :)

August Mid-Month Pick-Me-Up

ALTERED DVD TIN TUTORIAL by Barista, Lan Amphone

Hello crafty people! Today I’ve got an altered DVD tin to share with all of you peeps. This tin measures 8”x 6” and I picked one up at my lss. If you can’t find one, substitute with any tin case or try a plastic pencil box found in the school supply area, they can be altered in just the same fashion.

For my project I used American Craft’s Dear Lizzy Line from TSR’s April kit.

Supplies Needed:
• DVD Tin (or pencil case)
• Coordinating pattern papers
• Cardstock or solid PP
• Piece of ribbon
• Flower
• Modge Podge
• Border punch/ or stickers
• Foam Tape

Step 1: Cut out all your pieces for the front cover and lay them out in the following order:

Solid Color #1 – 5.75” x 1.5”
Pattern #1 – 5.75” x 3”
Piece of matching Ribbon 5.75” long
Pattern #2 – 5.75” x 1”
Solid Color #2 – Punch a scallop strip 5.75” wide Pattern #3 – 5.75” x 2.5”

Step 2: Adhere each layer using Modge Podge starting from the top down. ( When I made mine, I cut my pieces longer to wrap around the outside edges but I would recommend just covering the top and leaving the sides and back unfinished)

Step 3: Attach flower cut from ribbon and two hand cut leaves.

Step 4: Cut a half circle out of cardstock and adhere with alpha stickers as shown. This completes the cover. Next we will work on the inside flaps. (note: I ended up not using the brads pictured below)

Inside Papers Needed:
pattern #4 - 8” x 5.75”
Solid #3 – 3” x 5.75”
Pattern #5 – 8” x 5.75”
Border paper or sticker

Step 5: Adhere Pattern #4 to inside left flap. Next we’ll create a pocket so you can slip a card inside. Take the solid 3” x 5.75” piece and score both ends at the ½” mark. Attach the flag border to the front top edge. Round the bottom corners and add two layers of foam tape to the back of the bottom edge and adhere to left flap of DVD tin with adhesive on the scored/folded ends.

Step 6: Adhere Pattern #5 to right side flap and you are done! Now just fill up your tin with goodies and give away to that special someone!

Week #31 Weekly Challenge!

THIS WEEK'S CHALLENGE: We're going with some "literal POP" this week! Create a layout that includes some sort of element that pops off your page a bit. I LOVED Shawnna's "Jordan" layout in this month's Doubleshot Gallery. Well, in truth, it pops because of that beautifully composed black-and-white photo, but the dimension that Shawnna gave to those butterflies really takes this layout to the next level. So, try this technique this week and give one or more of your layout element a bit of "literal POP!" WEEK #31 CHALLENGE FOLDER. All layouts must be uploaded by 9:00 a.m. CST on Monday, August 9th.
